Trentbarton to Increase Late Night Fares Despite £2 Cap
An East Midlands bus company, Trentbarton, has announced an increase in fares for early morning services, which may impact travelers relying on late-night transport. The £2 cap on most single journeys will remain until the end of 2024, but fares from midnight to 04:00 will no longer be capped, with the exception of the Skylink airport service.
Starting in July, Trentbarton will also increase the frequency of several services. From 14 July, the Ilkeston Flyer and the Two will operate every 10 minutes from Monday to Saturday, enhancing connectivity between Ilkeston, Derby, and Nottingham. Additionally, the Rainbow One, linking Alfreton and Ripley to Nottingham, will start earlier in the day. From 28 July, the Swift will run from Ashbourne to Derby every half hour from Monday to Saturday.
These changes come amid rising operational costs for parts, materials, lubricants, and fuel, according to Trentbarton. The Red Arrow link between Derby, the Queen's Medical Centre, and Nottingham will also see fare increases. Trentbarton attributes these fare hikes to global inflationary pressures affecting the transport industry.
The government-funded £2 single fare cap, introduced in January 2023 to promote bus use, will continue until December 2024. However, the adjustments in fares and services are expected to influence travel plans, especially for those traveling during late-night hours.
For travelers, these changes mean that while daytime and regular fares remain affordable, planning late-night journeys will require additional budgeting. The increased frequency of services is a positive development, offering more options and flexibility for day trips and commutes.
Tom Morgan, managing director of Trentbarton, emphasized the company's commitment to maintaining the £2 fare cap to attract more passengers. He acknowledged the challenges posed by inflationary cost increases but reassured travelers that the company is working to balance affordability with operational sustainability.
For those planning trips within the East Midlands, it's essential to stay informed about these changes to ensure smooth travel. The enhanced service frequency provides more convenience, while the fare increases for late-night services highlight the need for careful planning and budgeting.
