Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers at Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) stopped a Manassas Park, Virginia, man from bringing a loaded handgun onto a flight on Saturday, April 20. The .40 caliber handgun, which contained seven bullets, was discovered during a security checkpoint.

The incident unfolded as the man entered the security checkpoint and the X-ray machine detected the firearm in his carry-on bag. TSA officials promptly notified the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police, who confiscated the weapon and cited the man for a weapons violation.

Beyond the citation, the individual now faces a significant financial penalty. Civil penalties for attempting to bring weapons through airport security can reach up to $15,000, depending on mitigating factors. Scott T. Johnson, TSA’s Federal Security Director for Washington Dulles International Airport, expressed disappointment, stating that responsible gun owners should always know where their weapons are and never attempt to bring them through airport security.

Passengers can travel with firearms only in checked baggage, provided they are unloaded and stored in a hard-sided, locked case. The case must be declared at the airline check-in counter. TSA provides guidelines for traveling with firearms on its website. These measures are in place to ensure the safety of all passengers and crew during flights.

In 2023, a record-breaking 6,735 firearms were caught at airport security checkpoints nationwide, with 93% of them loaded. At Washington Dulles International Airport, gun catches at checkpoints have varied over the years, with the highest number recorded in 2022 at 25 incidents. The case involving the Manassas Park man serves as a stark reminder of the TSA's ongoing efforts to maintain airport security and the serious consequences for those who violate the rules.
