Tuscany Offers Grants up to €30,000 for Moving to Mountain Villages

The regional authorities of Tuscany have announced a new initiative: up to €30,000 for those willing to move to the region’s mountain villages. This proposal aims to revive communities suffering from population decline.

Rural Tuscany often has high real estate costs. However, this program could turn the dream of owning a home into reality. The Tuscan government will provide financial support to those who relocate to less populated mountainous areas.

The "Residency in the Mountains 2024" program offers between €10,000 and €30,000 for purchasing a house in one of 119 mountain villages in Tuscany with fewer than 5,000 residents. This should help counteract the migration of residents to urban centers.

Italy has previously employed various strategies to combat rural depopulation, such as selling houses for €1. Tuscany’s approach involves offering financial incentives to attract new residents. Stefania Saccardi, Vice President of the Tuscany region, emphasizes that this is a unique opportunity for a fresh start in life.

The grant is available to citizens of Italy, other EU countries, and non-EU citizens with a residence permit valid for at least 10 years. Applicants must currently reside in an Italian town or city but not in a mountain community. Financial assistance must not exceed 50% of the property’s purchase and renovation costs.
