The West of England rail route, linking Axminster and Exeter, will be unavailable for a fortnight in the middle of November for critical track improvements. Network Rail has announced that this closure is required to upgrade the old track that runs through Honiton Tunnel. Alongside the new rail installation, additional improvements will be made to the infrastructure, including the replacement of sleepers and ballast, ensuring smoother and safer rides for passengers once the route reopens.

During this period, alternative bus transportation will be in service, running between Axminster and Exeter St Davids, stopping at important stations along the way. Passengers should anticipate longer journey times and the possibility of delays, especially for those commuting to London or further destinations. South Western Railway is advising travelers to check schedules and plan accordingly to avoid any last-minute issues.

For those planning to visit the scenic attractions near Exeter, such as the Jurassic Coast, the rail disruption will make accessing these locations more challenging. The line, which typically offers direct access between coastal towns and Exeter, will require different travel arrangements during this time. Visitors may also encounter disruptions when heading to popular landmarks like Exeter Cathedral or the city’s famous underground passages, as the bus journey from Axminster will take more time than the usual train ride.

Other well-known destinations, such as the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, will also be harder to reach due to the rail works. This countryside area, appreciated for its walking paths and scenic views, is usually favored by travelers using the train, but the closure will necessitate alternative travel plans for those seeking to explore this part of the region.

Although this work will cause immediate disruptions for passengers, the long-term improvements are significant. When the route reopens, travelers will benefit from fewer delays and a more reliable service. The newly installed track, with its advanced protective materials, is expected to minimize future issues, ensuring smoother journeys in the years ahead.

For those traveling, this temporary closure means adjusting plans in the near term, but it also promises a more dependable rail service on this important route. These upgrades will enhance travel reliability and ensure that future trips to Devon and beyond are easier and less prone to delays.
