Uganda Airlines Expands to European Market with New London Gatwick Route
Uganda Airlines is making significant strides toward international expansion with plans to launch a new route to London Gatwick by the end of this year. This move comes as part of the airline's broader strategy to double its fleet and increase its destinations over the next five years, reflecting its strong international ambitions.
The airline currently operates six aircraft, including four CRJ900LRs and two Airbus A330-800neos. In addition, it utilizes an Airbus A320-200 wet-leased from South Africa's Global Airways to service regional routes that the CRJ900 cannot handle due to payload limitations.
To bolster its regional operations and meet growing demand, Uganda Airlines recently issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) for up to four Airbus A320neos. While the new A320neos are expected to be delivered by 2031, the airline is in active discussions with lessors to acquire these aircraft sooner, aligning them with the airline's cabin configuration and design standards.
The carrier is also looking to enhance its long-haul capabilities with new widebody aircraft. A recent agreement with Boeing executives and Uganda’s President includes the acquisition of two Boeing 777 Freighters and 787 Dreamliners. The airline is progressing with the 787 deal and continues negotiations with Boeing.
Securing slots at London Gatwick has been a pivotal achievement for Uganda Airlines, especially given the unavailability of slots at Heathrow. This new route will begin operations from Entebbe to London Gatwick by the end of 2024. Additionally, Stansted is being considered as an alternative to further expand the airline's European reach.
Regionally, the wet-leased A320 currently serves crucial destinations like Lagos, Nairobi, and Kinshasa, enabling higher frequencies on these routes. Plans are underway to extend the A320’s service to Johannesburg, pending approval from the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA), to overcome the CRJ900’s capacity limitations for this route.
With these ambitious plans, Uganda Airlines aims to significantly enhance its presence on the international stage, offering more routes and modernized aircraft to its passengers, and positioning itself as a key player in the global aviation market.
