UK Government Announces Sustainable Aviation Fuel Mandate, ABTA Welcomes the Initiative
The UK Government has announced plans to mandate 10% of jet fuel used in all UK outbound flights to be sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) by 2030, marking a significant step towards the aviation industry's decarbonisation. This decision aligns with broader efforts to reduce carbon emissions in air travel.
ABTA, The Travel Association, responded positively to this announcement, recognizing it as a move in the right direction. However, ABTA's Chief Executive, Mark Tanzer, emphasized the need for governmental support to make this mandate a reality, highlighting the importance of establishing the necessary infrastructure for SAF production within the UK.
Tanzer also mentioned that the mandate aligns with the goals set in ABTA's "Manifesto for Travel and Tourism." He noted that while the consultation on a revenue certainty scheme is a positive step, the UK must accelerate its efforts to generate sufficient SAF to support the mandate. The ability to produce SAF domestically will be critical to achieving the government's goals.
Another key point raised by ABTA is the need for air travel to remain affordable while pursuing decarbonisation. Tanzer acknowledged the government's inclusion of a review mechanism in its plans, aiming to manage prices and minimize the impact on ticket costs. This approach could help maintain a balance between environmental sustainability and affordability for travelers.
ABTA's endorsement of the SAF mandate underscores the association's commitment to sustainability within the travel industry, reflecting a collaborative effort between the government and industry stakeholders to transition to greener aviation practices. With continued support and the right infrastructure, the UK could pave the way for a more sustainable future in air travel.
