Lima, the capital of Peru, has opened the first 5 km long subway line. The Lima-2 facility was launched on December 21, 2023.

It is reported that the new station will serve more than 60,000 passengers of the new subway line. The opening of such an important public transport facility was announced by the Ministry of Transport and Communications of Peru, railway-technology writes.

This is Phase 1A of Linea 2, which was presented by Peruvian President Dina Boluarte and Minister of Transport Raul Perez Reyes.

"The political will of the government has made it possible to unlock this transport megaproject for the benefit of citizens," they emphasized during the presentation of the Lima subway line.

The new section of the metro line in Lima and Callao will be a significant moment in the history of the capital, local authorities are confident.

The Peruvian President emphasized that after the project is completed and 27 stations of the second subway line are built, more than a million people from 10 districts of the capital will be covered by new public transportation facilities.

In addition, during the 'white march of Phase 1A', Linea 2 services will be provided to passengers free of charge for the first three months.

It is noted that the new section will connect the Evitamiento and Mercado Santa Anita stations. Thanks to the newly built section, passengers will be able to reach the desired station in less than seven minutes, while this distance takes about 35 minutes by public transport.

What is known about the subway construction

Linea 2 is a fully automated metro system that has been under construction and development by an Italian-Spanish-Peruvian consortium since 2015. Line 2 consists of three phases, including 1A, 1B, and 2.
