United Airlines Doubles Check-In Time Requirements, Impacting Future Travelers

United Airlines has revised its "contract of carriage," doubling the required advance check-in time for flights. Although not yet enforced, this change could significantly impact travelers' schedules in the future.

For domestic flights, passengers must now check-in at least 60 minutes before departure, up from the previous 30 minutes. International travelers will need to check-in 75 minutes before departure, increased from 60 minutes. Specific airports may have different requirements, but United's website has not yet been updated to reflect these changes.

These updates were made in anticipation of possible future enforcement. United states that any changes in check-in times will be posted on their website before implementation at airports. This precaution allows for changes that may apply to tickets sold today for travel in May 2025 and beyond.

Basic economy passengers, who cannot check-in online or via the mobile app, will need to arrive early enough to complete check-in in person, adding to the uncertainty of their travel plans. The time required depends on various factors, including staff availability and the number of kiosks at the airport.

The move has raised concerns about customer convenience. Matthew Klint of Live and Let’s Fly suggests that United should clarify these changes sooner rather than later. He speculates that the enforcement of these new requirements could start as early as June 2025.

United Airlines aims to position itself as a premium carrier, catering to travelers with tight schedules. However, this change appears to prioritize operational efficiency over customer convenience, potentially leading to longer wait times and added stress for passengers.

As United works to enhance its services, this adjustment highlights the balance between operational needs and customer satisfaction. Frequent flyers and occasional travelers alike should stay informed about potential updates to avoid disruptions in their travel plans.
