Travelers using Merseyrail’s Southport line should be aware of an important rail closure scheduled for August. Network Rail is set to replace the bridge over the River Alt in Formby, impacting travel plans in the region.

From August 19 to August 23, 2024, the 110-year-old bridge will undergo a significant upgrade to a new concrete structure, enhancing safety and reliability for years to come. This essential £3.5m project means that trains will not operate between Hall Road and Formby during this period.

For those planning trips in this area, alternative transportation will be provided. Buses will replace train services between Hall Road and Formby, stopping at all usual stations. Additionally, there will be express bus services running non-stop between Southport and Hall Road, ensuring that travel disruption is minimized.

Chris Penny, scheme project manager at Network Rail, expressed his appreciation for the patience of travelers while the bridge replacement is carried out. He also acknowledged the local community’s understanding and promised efforts to keep disruptions to a minimum.

Suzanne Grant, chief commercial officer and deputy managing director at Merseyrail, apologized for the inconvenience but emphasized the necessity of the project. She assured that a comprehensive rail replacement bus service is in place to help travelers reach their destinations. She advised all passengers to plan for extra travel time during the project.

For more information on alternative travel options, travelers are encouraged to use the journey planner on the Merseyrail app or visit the Mersey Rail website. This will provide up-to-date information and help in planning your journey efficiently.
