A proposed Universal theme park near Bedford could lead to a major expansion of the planned Wixams railway station, enhancing travel options for visitors. The station, originally planned more than two decades ago, is now poised for a significant upgrade if the theme park plans proceed.

The Bedford Borough Council, which took over the project in 2018, has seen costs rise from an initial £27 million to a projected £57 million, with inflation driving further increases. The council aims to open the station by 2026, coinciding with the potential debut of the new theme park.

Conservative councillor Graeme Coombes highlighted that the addition of a Universal theme park on a 480-acre site south of Bedford would necessitate a much larger station, likely funded by central government. This development promises to transform travel in the region, providing a robust infrastructure to support the anticipated influx of tourists.

The Midland Main Line, which will include the Wixams station, is set to benefit from this expansion. By 2022, the cost had already reached £39 million, with further increases expected. Mr. Coombes emphasized the importance of completing the project on time to avoid losing significant Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) funds from developers.

For travelers, this means a smoother, more efficient journey to one of the UK’s potential top tourist destinations. The new station is expected to be operational by the second half of 2026, aligning with the projected timeline for the theme park's opening.

If the Universal Theme Park project goes ahead, the new station will be built to accommodate the large number of expected visitors, ensuring that travel to and from the park is as convenient as possible. This is exciting news for travel enthusiasts looking for new attractions and easier access to major tourist sites.
