Venice has begun selling tickets for day-trippers to access the city as part of a long-planned attempt to curb tourism.

The tickets, which can be purchased online, will allow visitors to explore the city without an overnight stay on certain peak days in spring and summer. The fee will cost 5 euros ($5.43) and will be valid for travelers over 14 years old from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., as reported by Travel + Leisure.

"This fee, a first-of-its-kind experiment, is aimed at more efficiently managing the flow of visitors and preserving the city's unique heritage," reports the city's official tourism website.

The fee will be in effect on the following days:

  • April 25-30
  • May 1-5
  • May 11-12
  • May 18-19
  • May 25-26
  • June 8-9
  • June 15-16
  • June 22-23
  • June 29-30
  • July 6-7
  • July 13-14.

Day visitors who pay the fee in advance will receive a QR code, which must then be shown to officials at the main access points in Venice. Day-trippers who fail to pay will be fined from 50 euros ($54.29) to 300 euros ($325.72) plus an additional 10 euros ($10.86) for the entrance fee.

Tourists who stay overnight will not have to pay the new day fee, but they must submit an online application for an exemption. Overnight guests who have already booked a hotel stay will already pay another tax.

The daily fee will not apply to travelers visiting smaller islands such as Murano or Burano.
