The WestJet Group, in collaboration with the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA), announced May 5 that they have successfully negotiated a tentative agreement on their first collective bargaining deal. This significant development comes after months of deliberations and has effectively prevented a potential work stoppage, thereby safeguarding travel plans for countless passengers across Canada.

The agreement marks a notable achievement in labor relations for WestJet and AMFA, who represent the Aircraft Maintenance Engineers at WestJet. It is now pending a ratification vote by the union membership. Diederik Pen, President of WestJet Airlines and the Group Chief Operating Officer, expressed satisfaction with the negotiations. He highlighted that the agreement positions WestJet's engineers as the highest paid in Canada, with unrivaled work-life balance and job security.

This agreement not only averts a disruption in service but also sets a new standard in the industry, reflecting the essential contributions of the Aircraft Maintenance Engineers to the airline. Will Abbott, AMFA National Region II Director, emphasized the rigorous effort over nine months that led to this tentative agreement, praising the engineers and technical operations staff for maintaining the highest safety standards.

As the ratification process unfolds, both WestJet and AMFA express a unified commitment to continue offering reliable and affordable air travel. This agreement underscores a significant stride in labor relations, setting a positive precedent for future negotiations within the aviation industry.
