WestJet has announced the cancellation of an additional 235 flights due to the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association's (AMFA) ongoing strike, severely impacting travel plans over the Canada Day weekend. Despite an order for arbitration from the Minister, the union's continued strike actions are causing significant disruption for tens of thousands of travelers.

The cancellations, which began on June 27 and are set to continue through June 29, have already affected a substantial number of passengers. On June 27 and 28, approximately 3,300 guests were impacted by 25 cancellations, with another 150 cancellations on June 28 affecting around 20,000 guests. The latest round of 235 cancellations on June 29 is expected to disrupt the plans of about 33,000 travelers.

WestJet's President and Group Chief Operating Officer, Diederik Pen, expressed frustration over the union's actions, highlighting the widespread consequences for travelers missing significant events and essential appointments. He emphasized the airline's commitment to finding a resolution and maintaining operational stability despite the challenges posed by the strike.

The airline has been forced to park aircraft at various stations across Canada as part of its efforts to manage the disruption. This move aims to reduce flying in a controlled manner while minimizing further impact on passengers. WestJet urges travelers to check flight statuses before heading to the airport and to stay updated via the airline's Guest Updates page.

For more detailed information on the situation, WestJet has provided a Fact Page on their website. The airline continues to seek intervention to resolve the strike and mitigate further disruptions for its passengers.
