WestJet Cancels Flights Ahead of Potential Maintenance Engineers' Strike
WestJet Group has begun canceling flights in response to a potential strike by WestJet Aircraft Maintenance Engineers and other Tech Ops employees. This preemptive move is aimed at minimizing disruptions for passengers and avoiding the abandonment of aircraft in remote locations. The cancellations allow for organized communication with both guests and crew.
The airline is awaiting intervention from the Canadian Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) under the Canada Labour Code, which could mandate arbitration for a first collective agreement and prevent the strike. WestJet Group President Diederik Pen expressed regret over the disruption, highlighting the breakdown in bargaining despite a significant pay increase offer for maintenance engineers.
Over the next 48 hours, WestJet plans to park aircraft in a phased and safe manner, resulting in approximately 40 flight cancellations affecting around 6,500 passengers. WestJet assures that safety remains a top priority and advises passengers to check flight statuses before heading to the airport.
WestJet is making efforts to accommodate impacted passengers by offering alternative travel arrangements and providing updates through their Guest Updates page. The airline emphasizes that they are committed to resolving the situation quickly to resume normal operations and minimize further inconvenience to travelers.
