WestJet Debuts Direct Flights from Calgary to Reykjavik, Enhancing Canada-Iceland Travel

WestJet has officially launched its new non-stop service from Calgary to Reykjavik, marking the airline's seventh direct European route from Calgary this summer. The inaugural flight, WestJet Flight 38, took off to a warm reception, signifying a milestone in the airline's expansion and Calgary's evolution as a significant North American travel hub.

The new route, operating four times weekly, employs WestJet's 737 MAX aircraft and connects passengers directly to Iceland's capital, Reykjavik. This service aims to streamline travel between North America and Europe, providing a direct link to Iceland's stunning landscapes and unique geological features.

Angela Avery, WestJet Group’s Executive Vice-President, highlighted the route's significance in expanding the airline’s European network, emphasizing the strategic intent to enhance global connectivity through the Calgary hub. This initiative further cements Calgary International Airport's position in the aviation industry, supporting its claim as the best connected mid-sized city in North America.

The launch also strengthens cultural and economic ties between Canada and Iceland, with both Calgary Airport Authority and Keflavik Airport acknowledging the route’s potential to boost tourism and business exchanges. Chris Dinsdale, President and CEO of the Calgary Airport Authority, and Gudmundur Dadi Runarsson from Keflavik Airport both praised the new service for its role in advancing international cooperation and connectivity.

Complementing the new air route, WestJet's partnership with Icelandair facilitates smoother travel experiences for passengers, allowing for interconnected flights and streamlined baggage handling across the two carriers’ extensive networks.
