WestJet Encore and ALPA Reach Tentative Agreement, Avoiding Service Disruption
WestJet has announced a tentative agreement with the Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA), which represents WestJet Encore pilots. This second collective bargaining agreement between the organizations prevents a potential work stoppage, with both parties awaiting the membership's second ratification vote.
Following a lockout notice issued 29 May, ALPA and WestJet returned to negotiations. Through challenging but meaningful discussions, they reached a timely resolution, ensuring WestJet Encore operations and guests’ travel plans remain unaffected.
Diederik Pen, President of WestJet Airlines and Group Chief Operating Officer, expressed satisfaction with the agreement, emphasizing its fairness and sustainability. He highlighted that the deal aligns with ALPA's key priorities while adhering to essential financial parameters. Pen acknowledged the uncertainty caused by the lockout notice and reassured that WestJet's primary commitment remains to provide affordable air service without compromising future employment security within the WestJet Group.
The agreement underscores a collaborative effort to balance pilot needs with the airline’s financial health, fostering a stable future for both employees and travelers. This development is crucial for maintaining trust and reliability in WestJet Encore's services as both parties continue to work towards the final ratification of the agreement.
