WestJet, a Canadian budget airline, has launched an ultra-basic plane ticket that eliminates hand luggage and boards passengers last, offering a no-frills, lowest-priced option.

WestJet's new fare, known as UltraBasic, aims to provide more choice and make air travel more accessible by reducing prices across domestic and transborder routes. The UltraBasic fare allows passengers to add extras, such as reserving a seat in advance or adding a checked bag, for additional fees.

Passengers who opt for the UltraBasic fare can bring only a personal item to be stored under the seat. They will receive a pre-assigned seat at the back of the aircraft and have the option to purchase 'Extended Comfort', checked baggage, or seat selection. They will also have access to onboard food and beverage offerings and the 'WestJet Connect' inflight entertainment system.

However, UltraBasic passengers are not allowed to bring a carry-on bag and will be the last to board the aircraft. An exception is made for those flying on transpacific and transatlantic routes, who are permitted a carry-on bag in addition to a personal item.

The fare offers no flexibility, meaning bookings cannot be changed or canceled after 24 hours, even for a fee. WestJet ensures clear messaging about the fare and its limitations throughout the booking process, and digital and printed boarding passes will indicate that no carry-on bags are allowed.

Once UltraBasic is launched, WestJet's Basic Fare will no longer be available. Passengers who booked the Basic fare before the June 4, 2024 launch will still be allowed a carry-on bag on all WestJet flights.

John Weatherill, WestJet’s group executive vice-president and chief commercial officer, stated, "We are committed to air travel affordability, and UltraBasic is an innovative cost-effective solution that strengthens WestJet’s ability to offer guests budget-friendly airfares to more destinations. With UltraBasic, guests can tailor a travel experience that meets their needs, without paying for additional services they don’t value. We are delivering on our low-fare promise and believe UltraBasic will give more Canadians the opportunity to fly."

This move aligns WestJet with other budget airlines like Ryanair and easyJet, which offer low-priced flights and charge for additional services like printing boarding passes or changing ticket names.
