The WestJet Group has launched its first direct flight between Calgary and Seoul, marking a significant milestone in the airline's expansion. The nearly sold-out inaugural flight is the first of 140 scheduled flights between the two cities this summer, highlighting the strong economic and cultural connections between Canada and South Korea.

On May 18, amidst great fanfare, WestJet's first flight to Seoul departed from Calgary International Airport. This new route emphasizes WestJet's commitment to expanding its global reach, fostering closer ties between Alberta's visitor economy and Asia's dynamic business and tourism sectors.

WestJet’s new service will operate thrice weekly on its 787 Dreamliner through October 27, 2024, with plans to resume in Spring 2025. This move aims to boost economic and cultural exchanges between the two nations, which share a long history of mutual support and trade.

Canada and South Korea maintain robust ties, strengthened by increasing immigration, tourism, and business interactions. South Korea is one of Canada's top sources of international students, while Alberta's trade with Indo-Pacific countries remains vital. WestJet’s direct route, with 60 tonnes of cargo capacity, enhances trade opportunities, facilitating the import and export of goods.

Additionally, through a codeshare agreement with Korean Airlines, passengers can access six additional cities across four Asian countries from Incheon International Airport. This partnership allows for seamless travel experiences, offering a single connection and unified ticketing and baggage transfer.

This new route is part of WestJet's broader strategy to expand its international offerings, with other transoceanic flights including routes to Tokyo and various European destinations. The airline's latest move reflects its dedication to enhancing travel convenience and fostering international connections.
