WestJet Restores 16 Aircraft After Severe Hailstorm in Calgary
In early August, a severe hailstorm in Calgary damaged 16 WestJet aircraft, accounting for about 10% of its fleet. These damages require thorough inspection and repair, as critical aerodynamic surfaces, which ensure the aircraft's maneuverability and flight safety, were affected. The hailstorm also led to the cancellation of numerous flights, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded in Calgary, adding complexity to the situation.
To expedite the recovery, WestJet mobilized its technical teams in Calgary and Toronto and engaged external partners, including Boeing and Canadian North. The work is being carried out around the clock to minimize schedule disruptions and bring the aircraft back into service as quickly as possible. Additionally, the severe storm also damaged the infrastructure of Calgary International Airport and surrounding areas, further complicating the recovery efforts.
Despite these efforts, wait times on the support line remain above normal, causing inconvenience for passengers. However, the company continues to maintain connectivity across key routes with unaffected aircraft.
WestJet's CEO expressed gratitude to the employees for their dedication and to passengers for their patience, noting that many guests, despite the flight cancellations and related inconveniences, have shown understanding and support. This is particularly important during the chaos caused by the storm.
