For those who fly frequently, one of the most important factors can be the amount of legroom available at the seat. This is a factor that directly affects comfort during the flight.

A recent study analyzed the amount of available legroom on the most popular routes of various US airlines and ranked them from largest to smallest. According to the Upgraded Points study, JetBlue was the clear winner, while Frontier Airlines and Spirit Airlines took 7th place, as reported by Travel + Leisure.

Full rating based on available legroom for passengers:

  • JetBlue - 32.3 inches
  • Southwest Airlines - 32 inches
  • Alaska Airlines/Delta Air Lines - 31.8 inches
  • American Airlines - 31 inches
  • United Airlines - 30.2 inches
  • Hawaiian Airlines - 30.1 inches
  • Frontier Airlines/Spirit Airlines - 28 inches.

"We analyzed the seat pitch, the distance between a point on one seat and the same point on the seat in front of it for an economy class seat on the listed flights and calculated the average for each airline," explained Alex Miller, founder and CEO of Upgraded Points, in an analysis of the results.

The data collected focused on economy class seats. To compare how legroom varies across different classes of service, the survey indicates that United's seat pitch is 30.2 inches, whereas Economy Plus seats are 34 inches and United First Class seats are 37 inches.
