Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) is a critical aviation hub, strategically located within a five-hour flight of 50% of the world's population. This prime positioning makes it one of the busiest airports globally, especially noted for its cargo operations. During an interview with Simple Flying, Steven Yiu, Executive Director of Airport Operations at Hong Kong International Airport, elaborated on the factors contributing to the airport's significance and its recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Steven Yiu emphasized Hong Kong's central location in Asia, highlighting its proximity to populous countries such as China, India, and Indonesia. He noted that Hong Kong Airport has been a vital aviation hub since the 1970s, even before China's rapid development. The airport's prominence is further underscored by its status as the busiest cargo airport, handling 4.3 million tons of cargo annually and consistently seeing multiple cargo Boeing 747s on its tarmac. The airport has maintained this position since 1996, continuing Hong Kong's historical role as a major trading gateway to China.

Hong Kong International Airport hosts around 130 airlines, with Cathay Pacific and Hong Kong Express, both based in Hong Kong, accounting for approximately 45% of the traffic. The airport serves as a major transit point and is well-integrated with the city's mass transit system, featuring an express train line connecting it to Tsing Yi Station, Kowloon Station, and Hong Kong Station.

Before the pandemic, the airport handled about 75 million passengers annually, with daily traffic reaching around 200,000 passengers. Although Hong Kong lifted all pandemic restrictions only in March 2023, the airport has made significant strides in its recovery, now operating at approximately 80% of its pre-pandemic capacity, translating to about 160,000 passengers daily. Yiu expressed optimism about returning to 100% of pre-pandemic levels by the end of the year or early next year, though he acknowledged some uncertainties in the Hong Kong and Mainland economies.

The airport's expansion to a three-runway system is one of Hong Kong's largest infrastructure projects, involving significant land reclamation. This expansion aims to accommodate future air traffic growth, with new terminals still under construction as part of this massive project.

In summary, Hong Kong International Airport's strategic location, extensive cargo operations, and robust recovery efforts underscore its integral role in global aviation. Its ongoing expansion and infrastructure projects further reinforce its position as a pivotal hub in Asia and the world.
