The Corinthia region in Greece is facing ongoing wildfires, which have been wreaking havoc on local communities for three days. Starting in early October, the fires quickly spiraled out of control, fueled by strong winds that accelerated their spread across the mountainous terrain.

Danger for Residents and Travelers

The flames have already engulfed vast areas, forcing local authorities to urge residents of several villages, including Sofiana, to evacuate their homes. However, not everyone followed these recommendations, raising serious concerns among rescue services. This situation reminds residents of the 2000 disaster, when fire consumed half of Corinthia. Once again, locals are experiencing a repeat of the tragedy, but they hope that current measures will help minimize the damage.

Emergency Response: EU Support for Greece

To combat the blaze, more than 400 firefighters have been mobilized, working together with aerial forces to extinguish the fire. The operation involves 14 helicopters and 8 aircraft, with additional support from the European Union—aviation from Croatia and Italy is already assisting in the operation. Despite all efforts, challenging weather conditions continue to complicate the firefighting efforts.

Wildfires and Tourism

For tourists planning trips to the Peloponnese region, the situation remains highly unstable. Corinthia is a popular destination for those interested in historical landmarks and natural beauty, but the wildfires may severely affect travelers' plans. Many trails and roads are closed, and tourists are advised to reconsider their routes, avoiding areas affected by the fires.
