Wizz Air Calls for Immediate Action on European Air Traffic Control Issues
Recent days have seen significant disruptions across European airspace due to severe weather events impacting airport slot management. These simultaneous weather conditions have overwhelmed air traffic control authorities and Eurocontrol, leading to widespread delays and cancellations for airlines operating in Europe.
On June 26, European airspace experienced approximately 450,000 delay minutes, with weather accounting for 360,000 of those minutes. Wizz Air alone reported over 30,000 additional delay minutes in the past four weeks compared to the same period last year.
This situation, beyond the control of individual airlines, has forced Wizz Air to urge the relevant authorities to address the systemic issues affecting air traffic control. Despite Wizz Air's preparation for a smooth summer season, the inefficiencies in the air traffic control system have led to significant disruptions.
Wizz Air continues to inform passengers of any schedule changes through SMS and email, emphasizing the importance of booking directly through the airline's website or app. Passengers who booked through online travel agencies (OTAs) should check their flight status and request changes via the respective OTAs.
Due to the widespread impact on multiple airlines, hotel capacities in Europe may be constrained. Wizz Air is striving to accommodate passengers but may ask them to arrange their own accommodation if external partners cannot meet all demands. Passengers can claim reimbursement for reasonable out-of-pocket expenses through Wizz Air's official website.
The ongoing issues underscore the need for urgent reforms in European air traffic control to prevent further disruptions and ensure a more reliable travel experience for all passengers.
