A woman was detained in Shanghai after bringing her pet sugar glider onto a China Eastern flight, causing a commotion that led to the aircraft's evacuation and a significant delay. The incident occurred on China Eastern Flight MU5599, a regular service between Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport and Jinan Yaoqiang International Airport.

On June 10th, the flight experienced a delay of over an hour when a sugar glider, brought onboard by a female passenger, escaped and caused panic. The passengers were evacuated as a safety precaution, and the woman was detained for disrupting public transportation.

This event highlights the strict regulations of the Chinese Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), which prohibits passengers from carrying live animals in the aircraft's passenger cabin. Pets must be transported in the cargo hold, ensuring the safety and comfort of all passengers.

The incident sparked outrage among passengers and netizens alike, with many criticizing the passenger for her actions and questioning airport security measures. Social media users, especially on TikTok, voiced strong opinions, with some calling for a permanent flight ban for the passenger involved.

China Eastern has not yet commented on the situation, but the airline is expected to review its policies and procedures to prevent similar incidents in the future. The delay on a nighttime flight understandably frustrated passengers, who expect timely and secure travel.

This incident also underscores the potential dangers of allowing animals in the passenger cabin. According to data from the National Library of Medicine, approximately one in ten people are allergic to animals, which can pose serious risks in the confined space of an airplane. Advanced air filtration systems in aircraft cannot entirely eliminate these risks, which can lead to severe allergic reactions or asthma attacks, endangering lives due to limited medical care available onboard.

In summary, while some airlines permit support animals, the CAA's prohibition of pets in the passenger cabin aims to safeguard passenger health and safety. The recent incident on China Eastern Flight MU5599 serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to these regulations.
