WTTC Calls for Global Adoption of WHO's Digital Health Network

The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has urged countries to join the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Global Digital Health Certification Network (GDHCN). This initiative aims to create a global digital database for storing travelers' vaccination records and other health information.

The goal of the GDHCN is to ensure consistent and efficient health checks for travelers across international borders. This network will facilitate the verification of vaccination status and other health credentials, promoting the continuity of travel and trade even during health emergencies.

The COVID-19 pandemic exposed significant weaknesses in global health preparedness, leading to a dramatic decline in tourism and empty tourist destinations. WTTC emphasizes the need to improve health infrastructure and preparedness to prevent similar disruptions in the future.

Tourism is a critical component of the global economy, contributing over $10 trillion annually and creating 330 million jobs. Travel fosters cultural exchange and understanding, making it an integral part of the human experience.

Advantages of Joining GDHCN Implementing the GDHCN offers several benefits, including streamlined travel procedures and enhanced public health safety. By having a standardized system for verifying health credentials, countries can reduce the risk of disease spread, ensuring that travelers are adequately vaccinated and healthy. This not only protects individual countries but also contributes to global health security, allowing for safer and more resilient international travel.

Concerns and Potential Downsides However, there are concerns regarding privacy and data security. Storing sensitive health information in a global database could lead to potential misuse or breaches of data, raising ethical questions about surveillance and individual freedoms. Additionally, there may be resistance from travelers and nations wary of the implications of such extensive data collection, which could be perceived as intrusive and overreaching.

Joining the GDHCN will help countries ensure seamless and effective health checks for travelers. This will support safe and uninterrupted international travel, promoting economic growth and strengthening cultural connections.

WTTC believes that supporting the WHO’s Global Digital Health Certification Network and the new pandemic treaty will help maintain safe and continuous global travel, thereby supporting the economy and cultural ties worldwide.
