The town is very colorful, with plenty to see and things to buy, so you'll have no trouble finding a place to put your travel savings to good use. The best time for a comfortable temperature trip to San Miguel de Allende is between October and April. And the best time for cheap flights to San Miguel de Allende you'll find out below.

Which airports to get to San Miguel de Allende from

The closest airports to the city would be Guanajuato (BJX), an international connection, and Queretaro (QRO), which serves as an intercontinental connection. The distance from these airports to San Miguel de Allende would be just over an hour and a half drive.

However, these connecting hubs are hardly served by cheap flights. So, if you're willing to spend a little more time and significantly less money, look for other ways to get there.

Alternative airports and ways to get to the city

Cheap tickets are more likely to be found to Mexico City and Guadalajara, of course connections can't be avoided if you're looking for cheaper flights, but that's not such bad news.

For example, you can find airfare from New York to Mexico City for $400 round trip if you choose between October and mid-December.

Or a Los Angeles to Mexico City connection for $250 roundtrip between October and February, not taking into account holiday weeks.

Money-saving tips:

  • Keep track of Mexican low-cost airlines Volaris and Viva Aerobus;
  • choose hotels that can provide airport transfers or car rentals;
  • if you're flying alone and landing at airports near the city, take a cab, as it can cost as little as $15 for a few people (fares start at $60 on Uber).

Car or bus to the city

If you choose comfort, then, of course, a rented car gives many privileges and freedoms. However, for budget travelers, these ways will come in handy:

  • Regular bus transportation from Mexico City and Guadalajara to Queretaro will cost no more than $12. Buses run quite often (every 15 minutes) and you won't have to waste time waiting;
  • from Queretaro to San Miguel de Allende for only $3 per hour.

When traveling to one of the most beautiful cities in the world remember that the more you save on the road, the more options there will be in the city itself. Don't be lazy to plan ahead and compare all your options, you'll reap dividends for your efforts and can easily return to this fantastic architectural masterpiece on the beaten path.
